I have many PCs running in the family. Norton Antivirus works very well at preventing problems and fairly well at cleaning them up.
Norton is very intrusive — it seems to always want to interact with you about every small thing. For example, if your PC is not powered on for a few days Norton will throw all sorts of warning messages that it’s virus definitions are out of date.
Norton has a free for two week download if you want to try it out. Go to their web site. Good to use if you suspect your PC is already infected. If you like it it’s cheaper to buy Norton antivirus through Amazon than to buy through Norton.
Microsoft now ships a free alternative. I’ve used Norton for years, but have now moved to the Microsoft download called “Microsoft security essentials”. Use google to find it. Only download from Microsoft, not from anyone else.

It does not consume PC resources. On execution it deletes the virus found in the autorun.inf files, but it does not restore the registry entries, so the system still looks like affected, but in reality there is no virus in it. The virus upload function does not work well.

As for many years, it still leaves a larger footprint than other Anti-virus software packages – I debate every year on whether to switch to Trend or something similar. This year was more iritating than usual because after installing I could not access my FTP site remotely or use remote desktop once VPNd into my site. Cause – Norton turned on my Windows Firewall (Advanced Properties on the Network Interface Card). It took me a few hours to figure it out.

I’ve received messages that my virus definitions were out of date, and when I try to manually update, the “attention, fix now” messages don’t go away.

But today I did get into a chat with a technician, who took control of my computer remotely, and he says he fixed the problems. So, if that’s true, that is pretty great.

So, we will see in time if the problem is really solved.
